After years of wear and tear on your back, you may need just a little support to keep you from slowing down. A doctor may prescribe you back brace with an L0621 medical billing code. But, what does that mean? A medical billing code is used to identify orthosis/procedures, this ensures that patients are getting the kind of care that they need. In order to be identified correctly, a third party must evaluate the brace, comparing it to a predetermined set of qualifications. Once the brace is approved, it is "awarded" that classification. (see qualifying factors for the L0621 below)
The medical billing code L0621 is a sacroiliac orthosis that is used to treat the dysfunction of the movement in the sacroiliac joint. For the most part, this is a flexible brace. Functionally, an L0621 brace must provide pelvic-sacral support. The brace must reduce motion around the sacroiliac joint. Straps and closures must be included, to give the brace a proper fit. An L0621 orthosis may also include a pendulous abdomen design, however the medical billing code is not dependent on this factor.
The L0621 medical billing code applies to prefabricated orthosis, and is considered an "off-the-shelf" orthosis. This means that the brace is not customized to fit one specific patient. This does not mean that you do not need treatment. If you are experiencing pain in your lower back, go see your doctor or local prosthesis for treatment.
