The L0637 is the coding awarded to Lumbar-Sacral braces, or lower back braces, which meet certain qualifications. Any back brace with an L0637 coding must provide rigid support for the anterior and posterior (front and back). In addition to the front and back having rigid support, it must also provide a rigid lateral (or side) support. The the front and back of an L0637 orthosis should extend from the tailbone to the T-9 vertebra (mid back).
L0637 braces provide control for two different planes of the body: the Sagittal and Coronal (left/right and front/back). An L0637 orthosis works by creating pressure within the torso in order to evenly distribute the support. Thus causing strain to be lifted for the spine.
Braces coded with L0637 include adjustment straps and closures. These braces may also include padding, shoulder straps, and a pendulous abdomen design. Braces that meet all these qualifications will only be awarded a L0637 coding if it is trimmed, molded, bent, assembled or in otherwise modified to custom fit the patient. The fitting must be done by an individual with expertise for fitting braces of this nature.
