The medical billing code L1902 is a ankle orthosis. These type of braces must be a gauntlet or similar style. Historically, a gauntlet is a knights armored glove, the important part of this glove covered the wrist. The gauntlet style of an L1902 should cover and protect the ankle, reaching from mid-foot to well over the ankle.

According to the L1902 regulations, ankle orthosis of this nature may have joints. However, joints are not required, and do not effect the billing code whether or not they are included. These braces are prefabricated, and are considered an "off-the-shelf" product. This means the ankle braces are not custom made, nor are they to be modified to fit one specific patient.
