Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) are used for the condition of drop foot. Medical billing code L1932 requires certain features of an AFO in order qualify for this classification. In order for an AFO to qualify, it must provide a rigid support for the outside of the tibial section of the leg (the tibia is the larger bone in the lower leg). The brace mus be completely made of carbon fiber, or a material of comparable form, in order to be eligible as an L1932.
The L1932 orthosis is a prefabricated brace. This billing code also indicates a fitting and adjustment for the AFO to properly fit the patient.
It is important to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis of drop foot, if it is not treated properly nerve damage can worsen. Treatment with an AFO is not suggested without a physicians consultation.
