Trauma or conditions of the neck can occur during car accidents, sports injuries, sleeping in an awkward position or pulling or tearing ligament tissue in another manner. Most neck injuries only effect it’s soft tissue, but in extreme cases broken bones, degenerated discs and misalignments can occur and need special treatment.
Diagnosis
If you suspect you know how you sustained your injury and it’s of the soft tissue (tendons and muscles), you may try some self-care before rushing to a doctor. If pain persists after a week of committing to your own healing, it’s time to see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment assistance. Your doctor will like preform a physical examination and take X-Rays to determine the sites of injury and pain, the extent of damage and the best way to heal your body and reduce pain. Diagnosis could be any of the following: fracture, herniated disc, whiplash, sprain or crick.
Self-Care to Try
Limiting mobility is often the first priority when dealing with a neck injury. Whether you just have a crick from “sleeping wrong” or something more serious, not moving the neck at all is essential to give it time to heal. There are support products that immobilize the neck in all cases of neck injury, even post-surgery. Shopping for a neck brace is all about the user’s preference (in color and design). Keeping the neck, shoulders and head comfortable, immobile and warm allow the body to work its natural magic and optimizes circulation of blood, oxygen and nutrients to the site in need of repair. Plenty of rest and fluid intake is always a recommendation, and like previously mentioned, if pain persists beyond a week, schedule a doctor’s appointment.
